ASPHALT PAVEMENT HOW DURABLE IS IT

Asphalt Pavement: How Durable Is It?

If you’ve ever wondered why asphalt is so often the “go to” material when it comes to road and lot construction—you’ve found the right article. But really—how durable is asphalt? And if it is, why do we see it broken down so often?

In this post,  we are going to delve in to a summarized overview that will give you a much clearer idea about how durable asphalt is, but before we get to the point, we want to highlight that there are several factors that affect and influence the service life of an asphalt surface

Among these factors, there is one that plays THE most important role: maintenance.

Yes, having regular maintenance performed on your asphalt pavement over time will increase the durability. On average, well maintained asphalt can be in service for 20 to 30 years.

What factors can affect the life of asphalt?

Like everything in life—there are things you can do to extend the life of something and also things you can do (or not) that will shorten the life of something.

Weather effects

On one hand the extreme temperatures of the sun affect the asphalt, causing premature failure if the exposure is continuous and for long extended periods. UV rays cook the liquids in asphalt making it turn brittle. That being said, you also do not want to be on the other end of the spectrum either. Being in wet/ humid environments also affects the durability of the asphalt because it accumulates under the pavement wreaking havoc with the asphalt’s foundation—weakening it, reducing the bearing capacity in the different layers.

Incorrect installation

This essentially explains itself. There are a number of different factors that need to be met for the asphalt to be considered quality paving. If any of those steps are not followed or executed incorrectly, the problems will present sooner than later.

Traffic

The more traffic, the more wear and tear the asphalt takes. Continuous heavy loads over time combined with weather, and other factors mentioned above all significantly contribute to asphalt failing under excess traffic loads.

Remember: Maintaining your surface with continuous proper care including periodic cleaning, repairs, and quality inspections will always be the key to extending the service life of any durable asphalt pavement surface.
